Grant to Improve Beach Accessibility - Avoca Beach

Coast Rehab, working with Avoca Beach Surf Club, successfully secured a grant from the Department of Sport & Recreation and Lifetime Care & Support Authority to fund the purchase of equipment to improve beach accessibility for people with disabilities. It is also our aim to raise community awareness as well as provide disability awareness training for local surf life savers. This program is a trial study. Feedback both positive and negative, from life savers and beach users, will form part of the written study. An Occupational Therapy student from Newcastle University will be completing an independent study as part of her honours degree. The mat has been used for the past few weekends, being rolled out when the flags go up and brought back in by surf lifesaving volunteers at the same time as the red and yellow flags go down. Great Day at Avoca Beach Funday

A big thanks to all those who came to Avoca Beach on the weekend to have a look at the 2 newly purchased beach wheelchairs that are in addition to the surf clubs existing beach wheelchair. Everyone also had the opportunity to trial the new mobi mat that allows wheelchair users to travel with relative ease across the soft sand to reach the more user friendly wet sand. Many positive outcomes already with the equipment making access a reality for those that had given up on returning to the beach as well as making it more easily accessible for those, like Claudia, who have persevered in accessing their local beach.
